Volunteers play many important roles at The Storefront. Volunteers make spaces welcoming; they assist in programs and at events; they serve on committees; they support people looking for work, and so much more. There are many opportunities to volunteer your time and expertise to support The Storefront as well as our community partners.
Special volunteer opportunity: The Back 2 School party!
Would you like to join our staff team for a day? We’re looking for up to 50 people to volunteer their time for our annual Back 2 School event, where local families come together for a day of food and fun, new haircuts and braids, bike repairs and tuneups, and of course, a new backpack. It’s one of our largest community events of the year.
Volunteering roles at The Storefront include:
Service Hub - Supporting community members in the resource centre with computer support, sending a fax, photocopying. This role will be working alongside Storefront staff in the Resource Centre.
Community Garden - Support the maintenance and upkeep of the community garden. This role will be working with the maintenance specialist and alongside resident gardeners.
Eco-Food Hub Kitchen - Assisting with organizing and preparing food, and distributing meals in the Eco-Food Hub Kitchen. This role will be working with Grassroots Leadership staff.
Maintenance & Facilities - Working with the Storefront’s Maintenance Specialist to ensure that indoor/outdoor facilities are safe, may entail light to medium duty lifting.
Communications & Marketing - Assisting with social media posts, creating campaigns, and gathering resources.
Community Events - Helping out with registration desk, checking in residents and greeting/welcoming residents. Will be working alongside Storefront staff and other volunteers.
Employment Programs - Assisting residents with computers, computer programs (MS Word/G Suite) for employment workshops (Job search,resume) will be working alongside a Storefront staff.
Steering Committee - Steering Committee is responsible for ensuring that The Storefront has strategic, creative and accountable leadership in place that makes decisions that are grounded in Storefront mission, principles and values. This role will be working with other Steering members, staff and the Director. Meetings are 6 times a year.
Braintrust - The purpose of The Storefront Braintrust is to bring a diversity of perspectives (racial, cultural, age, experience, location) to the governance of the East Scarborough Storefront. Braintrust meetings take place twice a year. Meetings are with other community residents, Storefront staff, and Steering Committee members.
